Iraqi Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari said that what is happening in Syria concerns Iraq and its interest as well as the interests of the region's countries, stressing the need for Iraq to be a side in any international or regional talks about the situation in Syria.
According to the Iraqi Foreign Ministry's website, Zebari said during his meeting with his Swedish, Polish and Bulgarian counterparts on Saturday that Iraq's position regarding Syria is based on its national interest, and that Iraq supports people's efforts to claim freedom and democratic rights as long as it's without imposition or custodianship.
During a similar meeting with the three European foreign ministers, Iraqi Deputy Prime Minister Hussein al-Shahrestani affirmed the need to adhere to the plan of UN Envoy to Syria Kofi Annan, voicing concern over the extremist takfiri elements that are attempting to draw Syrians into sectarian conflict which could envelope the region.
