Lavrov: Foreign Players Should Call for Stopping Violence, Guaranteeing Circumstances for Dialogue among all sides Except Mercenaries
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov warned of the consequences of interference in the crisis in Syria to support a side at the expense of another, asserting that the crisis has become one of the most pressing international issues.
In the Ministerial meeting of the Organization of the Interaction and Confidence-Building Measures in Asia (CICA), Lavrov said "It is unacceptable to interfere in the crisis to support a side at the expense of another and to watch with apathy the catastrophic situation in Syria."
Lavrov pointed out that all the foreign players, including the CICA member states should demand all the Syrian sides to end violence immediately, guarantee the circumstances for all Syrians, except for the mercenaries, to sit around the dialogue table far from any foreign interference to discuss the means for achieving a national reconciliation based on the UN Security Council's resolutions and the six-point plan of the former UN Envoy to Syria Kofi Annan and the memo issued by the Ministerial meeting in Geneva. Lavrov reiterated Russia's support to the efforts exerted by the UN Envoy to Syria Lakhdar Brahimi which are based on the aforementioned documents.
"The crisis in Syria is considered as part of the dramatic developments in the Middle East," Lavrov pointed out, adding "These developments undermine stability of several countries and are exploited to incite sectarian and ethnic confrontations."
Activities of the CICA Conference kicked off on Wednesday in the Kazakh capital, Astana.
Meanwhile, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Gennady Gatilov said "The West which rejected to condemn the terrorist acts in Syria at the UN Security Council is adopting double-standard approach in evaluating terrorist acts.
Russia: Some UNSC Members Ignore Terrorism, Encourage Violence in Syria
Permanent Mission of the Russian Federation to the United Nations said that Moscow was not successful in pushing the UN Security Council (UNSC) to adopt a draft statement condemning the terrorist attacks in Aleppo city.
In a statement released on Wednesday, the mission added that the stances of some UNSC members ignore terrorism and encourage the escalation of violence in Syria.
