Constitutional Court ready to receive presidential candidacy applications

Head of the Supreme Constitutional Court Adnan Zreiq said the Court is ready to receive candidacy applications for presidency starting off today, a day following opening registration, based on General Elections Law no. 5.

Registration for presidential candidates was declared open Monday by Speaker of the People’s Assembly Mohammad Jihad al-Laham, during a session that was attended by Prime Minister, ministers and representatives of local, Arab and foreign media.

Candidates can continue to submit applications through Thursday, 1 May, 2014.

According to Article 30 of the law, a presidential candidate must be at least 40 years of age and of the Syrian Arab nationality through both parents and not married to a non-Syrian.

A candidate who has not lived in Syria for at least 10 years uninterruptedly and who holds another nationality besides the Syrian one is not eligible.

A candidacy application will be dismissed if the applicant could not manage to get a written approval for running from at least 35 members of the People’s Assembly, who are not allowed to give approval to more than one candidate.

The Supreme Constitutional Court is in charge of monitoring the electoral process and regulating its procedures, according to Article 34.
