Deputy Prime Minister, Foreign and Expatriates Minister Walid al-Moallem affirmed on Saturday the importance of respecting UN Security Council’s resolutions, particularly those related to combating terrorism.
Al-Moallem, Meeting UN Special Envoy to Syria Staffan De Mistura , said that efforts of the political solution and the Council’s latest, relevant resolutions are linked to to the credibility of the efforts of fighting terrorism which require forcing the countries which support terrorism to stop backing it.
He reiterated the Syrian stance represented by continuing cooperation with De Mistura to combat terrorism and push dialogue among the Syrians forwards, adding “Syria is ready to take part in Geneva meetings at the appointed time.”
The Minister stressed the necessity of having a list on the terrorist organizations and another one about the names of the Syrian opposition sides that will join Geneva talks.
De Mistura, for his part, briefed al-Moallem on the efforts of the political solution to the crisis in Syria, Vienna negotiations and the UN Security council latest and relevant resolutions as well as the efforts exerted to hold another round of talks between the Syrian government and the opposition late this month.
During his meeting with the UN envoy last November, al-Moallem made it clear that any anti-terror effort not coordinated with the Syrian government would constitute a breach of the principles of the UN Charter and be incompatible with the ultimate goal of countering terrorism.
